The inaugural Save River Mpanga Marathon, organized by AFRIYEA Golf Academy in partnership with the Fort Portal Municipal Council and environmental organizations, was a resounding success, drawing hundreds of participants from across the Tooro region and beyond. The event combined athletics with environmental advocacy, raising awareness and funds for the restoration of the endangered River Mpanga.
Participants braved the early morning chill to gather at the starting line near Toro Golf Club, with energy and excitement palpable in the air. The marathon featured three categories: a full marathon, a half marathon, and a 5km fun run, ensuring that people of all ages and fitness levels could take part.
Runners, joggers, and walkers made their way through the streets of Fort Portal, past lush green hills, and along sections of the riverbank, carrying banners with messages about water conservation and environmental protection. The sight of hundreds of people united for a common cause was a powerful testament to the community's commitment to preserving their natural heritage.
"Today, we ran not just for fitness but for our river," said Isaiah Mwesige, Founder and Executive Director of AFRIYEA Golf Academy. "Every step taken today is a step towards a cleaner, healthier River Mpanga. This is what happens when a community comes together for a shared purpose."
The marathon raised significant funds that will be used for riverbank restoration, tree planting along the Mpanga catchment area, and community education programs on waste management and water conservation. Partner organizations also used the event to showcase eco-friendly products and share information about environmental best practices.
The success of the first Save River Mpanga Marathon has inspired plans to make it an annual event, with organizers already looking at ways to expand participation and increase the environmental impact. The marathon has become a flagship event for environmental advocacy in the Tooro region.
