As the world prepares to mark World Earth Day on April 22, 2026, an inspiring blend of sport and environmental conservation is taking root in the heart of Fort Portal. AFRIYEA Golf Academy is driving a green revolution that is transforming the way young people engage with both golf and their natural environment.
The initiative, dubbed "Green Golf for a Better Future," represents a pioneering approach to youth development that places environmental stewardship at the core of sports education. Through a series of tree planting activities, community clean-ups, and environmental awareness campaigns, the academy is nurturing a generation of eco-conscious athletes.
Fort Portal, often described as the tourism hub of Uganda, faces growing environmental challenges. Deforestation, wetland encroachment, and improper waste disposal threaten the city's natural beauty and ecological balance. AFRIYEA Golf Academy recognized that sport could be a powerful vehicle for change.
"We teach our students that golf is more than just a game — it is a platform for life," said Isaiah Mwesige. "When we combine golf training with environmental education, we create leaders who care about their communities and the planet."
The academy has planted over 2,000 trees across the Tooro region since launching its environmental program, partnering with local schools, community groups, and the National Forestry Authority. Each student who joins the academy participates in a tree planting ceremony as part of their orientation.
Beyond tree planting, the program includes hands-on workshops on recycling, composting, and sustainable agriculture. Students learn to create vegetable gardens using organic methods, reducing food costs while promoting healthy eating habits.
The impact is already visible. Local schools have reported increased interest in environmental clubs, inspired by the example set by AFRIYEA's young golfers. Community members have also joined the effort, participating in weekend clean-ups and tree planting drives organized by the academy.
As World Earth Day 2026 approaches, AFRIYEA Golf Academy is calling on other sports organizations across Uganda to integrate environmental conservation into their programs. "If every sports club in Uganda planted just 100 trees a year, imagine the impact," Mwesige said.
