Across the world today, the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly visible. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and the degradation of natural ecosystems are closely linked to human activities such as deforestation, pollution, poor waste management, and unsustainable land use. Rivers, forests, and wetlands are under growing pressure, and communities that depend on these natural resources are feeling the impact.
In Fort Portal, River Mpanga — a vital water source for thousands of residents and a critical ecosystem — faces threats from pollution, encroachment, and unsustainable human activity. In response, AFRIYEA Golf Academy is proud to announce the Save River Mpanga Marathon 2026, a community-driven initiative that combines fitness, environmental advocacy, and collective action.
The marathon, scheduled to take place later this year, will feature three race categories: a full marathon (42.2 km), a half marathon (21.1 km), and a 5 km fun run. Proceeds from the event will fund river bank restoration, tree planting along the Mpanga catchment area, and community education programs on water conservation.
"River Mpanga is the lifeblood of our community," said Isaiah Mwesige. "This marathon is our way of saying we will not stand by while our river dies. We are calling on every resident of Fort Portal and beyond to join us in this fight."
The event is organized in partnership with the Fort Portal Municipal Council, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), and several local environmental organizations. Participants will receive eco-friendly race kits made from recycled materials.
In the months leading up to the marathon, AFRIYEA will conduct a series of pre-race activities, including river clean-ups, environmental awareness talks in schools, and tree planting drives. These activities are designed to build momentum and engage the community in long-term environmental stewardship.
Registration for the Save River Mpanga Marathon 2026 is now open. Early bird discounts are available for groups and students. Corporate sponsors are also invited to support this important environmental cause.
