The GolfSixes League, a global junior golf development programme, has cemented its reputation as one of the most effective international initiatives for introducing young people to the sport. The latest milestone saw the Uganda Golf Union, in partnership with The R&A and AFRIYEA Golf Academy, host a highly successful GolfSixes League event at Toro Golf Club in Fort Portal.
An impressive 89 juniors competed in the grand finale of Uganda's GolfSixes League tournament, reflecting the rapidly growing participation and enthusiasm for the sport among young golfers from across the country, including clubs such as Mbarara Sports Club, Kilembe Mines Golf Club, Masindi Golf and Sports Club, and the host venue.
Originally launched in the United Kingdom in 2017, the GolfSixes League has evolved from a short team match-play concept into an international development programme aimed at making golf more accessible and enjoyable for beginners and young players worldwide.
The inclusion of Uganda in the League marks a significant milestone for golf development in East Africa. Uganda becomes the second African nation to host the GolfSixes League after South Africa's successful participation in 2024, highlighting the sport's growing appeal across the continent.
"The GolfSixes League represents a significant step forward in our commitment to growing the game at grassroots level. By introducing young people to golf through a simple, enjoyable and inclusive format, we are creating strong foundations for the future of the sport in Uganda," said Dr. Jackson Were, President, Uganda Golf Union.
"Our focus is on creating simple, enjoyable and truly inclusive pathways into golf. The GolfSixes League is designed to give young people a positive first experience of the sport in a team environment that prioritizes fun, friendship and personal development," said Isaiah Mwesige, Founder and CEO of AFRIYEA Golf Academy.
