AFRIYEA Golf Academy launched its inaugural Sustainability Championship, a unique golf tournament designed to promote environmental awareness and eco-friendly practices within the golfing community. The event, held at Toro Golf Club, combined competitive golf with environmental education and practical conservation activities.
The tournament featured innovative rules designed to minimize environmental impact: players used recyclable scorecards, water stations eliminated single-use plastic bottles, and all participants were required to collect at least five pieces of litter during their round. Players who collected the most litter received bonus points toward their final score.
"This championship proves that golf and environmental sustainability can go hand in hand," said Isaiah Mwesige. "We want to show the world that golf courses are not just places for sport — they are ecosystems that we must protect and preserve for future generations."
The Sustainability Championship was part of AFRIYEA's Green Golf initiative, which also includes tree planting, waste management training, and community clean-up campaigns. The academy plans to make the Sustainability Championship an annual event, with hopes of inspiring other golf clubs across Uganda to adopt eco-friendly practices.
The winners were awarded trophies made from recycled materials, and all participants received native tree seedlings to plant in their communities. The event concluded with a tree planting ceremony at the golf course, with over 100 seedlings planted along the fairways.
