Shamim Kabasigunzi, the newly elected Central East Female Councilor for Fort Portal Tourism City, has joined golf in Fort Portal following her victory in the highly contested 2026 elections.
Kabasigunzi's decision to take up golf aligns with her interest in promoting sports as a means of social empowerment, particularly for women and girls. She noted that participation in sports helps build discipline, leadership, social connections, and healthy lifestyles, which contribute to community development.
Speaking after joining the fraternity, Kabasigunzi said she intends to support sports development within Fort Portal Tourism City. She added that she plans to work with sports institutions and other stakeholders to increase opportunities for female participation and to support talent development.
Over the weekend, Kabasigunzi was officially welcomed to Toro Golf Club by the club's General Secretary, Saul Kusemererwa Akiiki, who commended her for embracing the sport. She said her interest in golf was inspired by her elder brother, Bals Victor, whom she hopes to emulate.
The councilor played golf for the first time during the weekend, describing the experience as new but encouraging. She expressed willingness to learn and grow in the sport and encouraged other leaders to consider golf as a platform for interaction, wellness, and networking.
AFRIYEA Golf Academy provides access to golf for juniors from diverse backgrounds in a safe and supportive environment. The academy runs holiday golf programs and school-based golf initiatives, and has partnered with institutions such as Tooro Parents Education Centre and Green Circle School.
