The annual Inter-Schools Golf Open, hosted by AFRIYEA Golf Academy, attracted a record number of participants this year, with over 120 students from 15 schools across the Tooro region competing for honors in various categories. The tournament, now in its fourth edition, has become a cornerstone of the academy's school golf outreach program.
Schools participating included Tooro Parents Education Centre, Green Circle School, Kyaninga Royal School, St. Mary's College, and several government-aided primary and secondary schools. Students competed in three age categories: Under-10, Under-14, and Under-18, with both boys' and girls' divisions.
"The growth of this tournament reflects the increasing interest in golf among school-going children," said Coach Daphine. "When we started, we had just 30 students from five schools. Today, we have quadrupled that number. The future of Ugandan golf is bright."
The tournament was preceded by a month-long coaching clinic where AFRIYEA coaches visited participating schools to introduce students to the basics of golf. This grassroots approach has been instrumental in demystifying the sport and making it accessible to children who might otherwise never have the opportunity to try it.
Winners received trophies, golf equipment, and school supplies donated by partner organizations. The top three finishers in each category also earned automatic selection for AFRIYEA's advanced training program, where they will receive specialized coaching throughout the school holidays.
