George Kituku’s story is one of persistence, passion, and the transformative power of a single sport. Born on May 22, 1968, in Mukubo, Uganda, George emerged from a humble background where every step forward required grit and resolve.

George’s early years were a patchwork of schools, each a milestone in a journey shaped by modest means and unwavering ambition. He began at Police Barracks Nursery School (1972-1973), a simple start that hinted at the disciplined life ahead. From there, he attended Buhinga Primary School (1974-1979) and Nyakasenyi Primary School (1980-1982), trudging through Uganda’s rural landscapes with a focus that belied his young age. Secondary school brought him to Kitumba SSS (1982-1986) and Mpanga SS (1987-1989), where his world expanded not just academically, but through an unexpected encounter with golf that would redefine his future.
His pursuit of knowledge didn’t end with secondary education. George trained as a teacher at Canon Apolo Core PTC (1990-1992) and NTC Kakoba (1998-2000), honing skills that would later serve him both on and off the course. Decades later, between 2016 and 2019, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Mountains of the Moon University (MMU), a testament to his belief that learning is a lifelong endeavor. Education gave him stability, but golf ignited his soul.
The Birth of a Golfer
In 1982, at the age of 14, George stepped onto the Toro Club Golf Course as a caddie, carrying bags for players under the guidance of two towering figures: Yahaya Katuramu and Sanusu Ssebi. These men, whom he still honors as mentors, introduced him to a game that was more than recreation it was a craft.
As a caddie, George didn’t just haul equipment; he studied the swings, the strategies, and the unspoken codes of the sport. By 1986, he shed the caddie’s role and gripped a club of his own, emerging as an artisan golfer with a natural flair.
What began as a side gig blossomed into a vocation. Over the next decade, George swept through local tournaments with a quiet ferocity, winning every Toro Club Open of that era. In 1987, he claimed the Rwanda Open, a victory that announced his arrival on a broader stage. His triumphs continued in 2001 and 2011, when he conquered the Kabale Hot Loaf tournament, proving his skill wasn’t a fluke but a sustained force. Each win was a brick in the foundation of a reputation that grew steadily across Uganda’s golfing community.
A National Stalwart
George’s talent transcended club boundaries. For 20 years, he represented Uganda’s Western Team, a role that showcased his endurance and consistency. From 2002 to 2012, he donned the national team’s colors, competing in South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda. At the East Africa Golf Championships, he was a linchpin, helping secure victories in four out of five tournaments and finishing second overall three or four times.
Selection for the national squad wasn’t handed out it was earned through a rigorous points system, and George’s steady performance kept him at the forefront.
His home in Fort Portal became a shrine to these achievements. Trophies lined the shelves, certificates adorned the walls, and practical prizes radios, TVs, blankets, coffee sets, bedcovers filled the rooms, turning his living space into a gallery of a life well-played. Over 25 Uganda Amateur Opens added to his tally, each round a testament to a career that stretched beyond the greens and into the fabric of Ugandan sports history.
Leading with Purpose
Leadership came as naturally to George as his swing. From 1996 to 1999, he served as Golf Captain at Toro Club for three consecutive terms—1996-1997, 1997-1998, and 1998-1999. In this role, he steered the club with the same discipline he brought to his game, fostering a community where players thrived. His tenure wasn’t just about winning; it was about building a culture of respect and excellence, qualities he’d absorbed as a caddie and refined as a competitor.
Golf, to George, was more than a pastime it was a philosophy. “Golf made me what I am,” he often reflects, attributing to it the discipline that shaped his character, the opportunities that led to employment, and the connections that introduced him to Uganda’s high-ranking personalities.
The relationships he forged over putts and drives social capital earned through years of fair play became as prized as any trophy, linking him to a network that amplified his influence.
Shaping the Next Generation
Today, George’s focus has shifted from personal glory to collective growth. Since the inception of the AFRIYEA Golf Academy in 2020, he has served as Assistant Head Coach, deputizing Pro Kasaija Stephen. At AFRIYEA GOLF ACADEMY, he shoulders the responsibility of planning lessons and guiding the academy juniors.
His approach is hands-on: teaching the mechanics of the swing, training the mind for focus, and instilling the etiquette that defines the sport. For George, golf isn’t just about hitting a ball; it’s about building character.
His primary goal remains steadfast: to preserve golf’s legacy in Uganda. He envisions a future where players uphold the traditions he cherishes, inspired by the late Yahaya Katuramu, his idol and model. George’s lessons go beyond technique he emphasizes respect for the course, courtesy to opponents, and pride in the game’s heritage. The juniors under his wing aren’t just learning to play; they’re inheriting a way of life.
